February 6. 2012
Portage, NY: Sheriff John M. York advises that on Saturday, February 4,
2012 at about 4:15pm the Livingston County 911 Center received a call for a
roll over motor vehicle accident that occured in a farmers field off Morris
Road in the Town of Portage. It was reported that two occupants of the
vehicle were injured and at a cabin also located on the property.
Sheriff's Deputies arrived on scene along with the Nunda Fire Department
and Ambulance to render assistance. The driver of the vehicle was James L.
Sova, age 37, of Tonowanda, NY and the passenger was Richard A. Bell, age
34, of Kenmore, NY. Both were taken by Nunda Ambulance to Strong Memorial
Hospital in Rochester, NY with injuries from the accident.
Deputies on scene determined that the two were in the field four wheeling
in a 2000 Ford Explorer SUV and on a hill hit a patch of snow which caused
the vehicle to turn sideways and rollover several times. It sustained
significant damage and appeared to be a total loss. Alcohol appeared to be
a factor in the accident and deputies are still investigating.
Deputy Robert Holt, ID Technician - Deputy Michael Williams, Investigator
Ronald Huff Jr., Sergeant Michael Dougherty, and Under Sheriff James
Szczesniak handled the investigation. The Sheriff's Office was assisted by
members of the New York State Park Police at Letchworth.
