Driver uninjured after losing control in Hornellsville

The Steuben County Sheriffs Office investigates the accident of Alicia Kiefer on State Route 36 in the Town of Hornellsville. At approximately 12:20P1v1 Kiefer was traveling North on State Route 36 between Canisteo and Hornell when she lost control of her vehicle and exited the west shoulder of the roadway. Kiefer then overcorr-ected and spun 180 degree’s exiting the east shoulder of the roadway and striking a guide rail where the vehicle came to rest. Kiefer was not injured in the accident. Kiefer was
cited for Failure to Maintain Lane.

Afton Man Arrested For Unlawful Possession Of Marihuana

(Afton, NY – February 22, 2012) On February 20, 2012, State Police at Sidney arrestedMitchell D. Birch, 21, of Afton, NY, for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on Afton Lake Road in Afton, NY. Mr. Birch was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Afton Court on March 12, 2012.

Leroy woman charged with Criminal Contempt
Elizabeth Ann Wortman, age 24, of Leroy NY, was arrested for Criminal Contempt 2nd for allegedly violating an order of protection. She was released on an appearance ticket and is to appear in Village of Le Roy Court on 03/12/2012 at 1 PM.

Bath woman taken to hospital after ice causes vehicle to strike embankment

The Steuben County Sheriffs office reports a one car motor vehicle accident on County Route 13 in the Town of Wheeler that occurred at about 07:30 am. M. Sara Wall of Bath, NY was traveling west on County Route 13 when she lost control of her vehicle due to ice. The vehicle struck an earth embankment causing extensive damage to the vehicle. Ms. Wall was transported to Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in a friend’s car for observation due to complaint of pain. The Sheriffs Office would like to thank the Prattsburgh Fire Department, Bath Ambulance Services, Rural Metro, and Steuben County Public Works for their assistance.

Driver airlifted after accident in Tuscarora

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a reported one vehicle collision that occurred this morning around 3:30 AM on County Route 5 in the Town of Tuscarora. Deputy Sheriffs were called the scene of the collision by a local resident after they heard the collision occur outside their residence. Upon arrival at the scene, the operator of the vehicle was found to be unresponsive and partially ejected from the vehicle. Sheriff’s Office Investigators were then called to the scene to assist with the investigation.
The initial investigation conducted reports that William J. Williams, age 46, of Mill Street in Woodhull was operating his Ford F-350 in a westbound direction on County Route 5 near the intersection, of Liberty Pole Road. The investigation of the scene revealed that Williams had drifted into the eastbound lane of travel and struck a bridge guardrail with the front portion of the vehicle. The vehicle then continued to travel westbound in the eastbound lane of travel along the guardrail until it came to rest on the bridge.
Williams was treated at the scene of the collision by Addison Ambulance and Corning Rural Metro ALS. A helicopter landing zone for the Guthrie Helicopter was then established at the intersection of County Route 5 and Liberty Pole Road and Williams was airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre for further treatment. Williams continues to be treated at Robert Packard Hospital where he is listed in critical condition with serious head injuries. At this time there is no indication of alcohol involvement and the cause of the collision is being attributed to driver fatigue.
The Sheriffs Office was assisted by Addison Fire Department, Tuscarora Fire Department, Corning Rural Metro Ambulance Service, and Guthrie Air. The investigation into the collision is continuing

Storage Container damaged by fire in Junius

Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 1081 Route 318 for the report of a fire inside of a storage container. Upon arrival at the scene Junius Volunteer Fire Department was at the location extinguishing the fire. The fire which was contained to the contents inside of the metal storage container was determined to be accidental in nature. Owner/ Resident of the property Kale Wilkins age 22 reports the fire was spotted by a passer by who called 911. Per Junius Fire Chief Michael Dewaele the fire was caused by a burning barrel which Wilkins was using to burn rubbish being too close to the storage container. Damages to contents were estimated to be in the $3,000.00- 4,000.00 range and the property was uninsured.
