The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office investigated a car-school bus motor-vehicle accident this morning (at 07:41 a.m.) that occurred on State Route 248 in the Town of Canisteo.
Canisteo-Greenwood School Bus Driver, James Rexford, 59, was operating Bus #15 in a northerly direction on State Route 248 with 38 children on board. When an unattended motor vehicle rolled backwards onto SR 248 from a driveway on the west side of the road striking the school bus.
Rexford observed the vehicle moving towards the roadway and was able to slow down the bus and minimize the impact. No injuries occurred as the result of Rexford’s actions.
The owner of the vehicle, Schuyler Q. Wallace, 36, of State Route 248, Canisteo, was issued a traffic ticket for allowing his unattended motor vehicle to idle without setting the brake and or turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind residents that it is unlawful and unsafe to leave a running vehicle unoccupied without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key from the vehicle, and effectively setting the brake thereon and, when standing on any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway.
Assisting the Sheriff’s Office was the Canisteo Fire Department, the Greenwood Fire Department, Canisteo Village Police and the Canisteo-Greenwood School District.
