Rochester Attorney Arraigned on Tax Charges for Failing to File Income Tax Returns

by New York State Department of Taxation and Finance ALBANY, NY (07/29/2010)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Acting Commissioner Jamie Woodward announced today that Louis V. Asandrov, a Rochester lawyer, was arraigned July 28 before Judge Maija C. Dixon in Rochester City Court on charges for failing to file state personal income tax returns for three years. Asandrov, 52, who resides at 227 Rosewood Terrace, is charged with five misdemeanor counts under New York State Tax Law for failing to file income tax returns for tax years 2006, 2007 and 2008, and failing to pay tax liabilities for 2006 and 2007. If convicted, Asandrov could face up to a year in prison for each misdemeanor charge. Asandrov, a licensed attorney in New York State since 1984, currently operates a solo practice at 159 Fitzhugh South, in the City of Rochester. His law practice includes representing taxpayers before the Tax Department. The charges are the result of a continuing initiative by the Tax Department to identify individuals who have failed to file and remit personal income taxes to the State. Acting Commissioner Woodward said, "People who purposely fail to pay their taxes force the rest of us to shoulder a greater burden. Honest taxpayers can rest assured that we are committed to seeing that the tax laws are equitably and impartially enforced and that all taxpayers, especially those who can most afford to do so, pay their fair share. "The State offers programs such as the Voluntary Disclosure and Compliance Program to encourage delinquent taxpayers to become compliant without facing criminal prosecution or civil penalty. It is hoped that this case will encourage such taxpayers to come forward and satisfy their obligations. For more information about these programs, go to the Department's website at www.nystax.gov." Acting Commissioner Woodward also commended Monroe County District Attorney Michael C. Green and his staff for their aggressive prosecution of this case. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty.
