NEW YORK, NY (03/08/2010)(readMedia)-- A 56-year-old woman convicted of fraudulently accepting workers' compensation benefits while working as a Walgreens clerk in Virginia was sentenced in Broome County Court on March 1 to pay $36,000 restitution to the New York Insurance Fund.
Veronica McClendon was sentenced after voluntarily returning to New York State to resolve the case. A former Broome County resident, she was also sentenced to a three-year conditional discharge.
McClendon was charged with workers' compensation fraud. She was accused accepting benefits on the basis that a job-related injury prevented her from working, while at the same time, she was employed in Virginia. She accepted the benefits over a five-year period.
McClendon was arrested following an investigation by the New York State Insurance Department's Frauds Bureau, the Insurance Fund's Division of Confidential Investigations and the Broome County Sheriff's Department.
